Zoloft is a popular medication used to treat a myriad of
psychological conditions, and has been approved by the Food and Drug
Administration to treat depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorders,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual
dysphoric disorder, although some patients are experiencing tragic side effects of Zoloft. In addition, many doctors and patients have found it to be
effective in treating other conditions, including generalized anxiety disorder,
premature ejaculation, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and migraine
headache. However, Zoloft suicide and suicidal ideations has become a controversial claim of some victims. The conditions that Zoloft is used for both according to Food and
Drug Administration approval and its off-label
uses include some of the most
common psychological conditions known to the medical community, and Zoloft is
used in treatment for millions of patients worldwide as it is among the most
popular psychological drugs on the market.
Zoloft is an SSRI drug, or a selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitor medication. This means that it affects the way the brain processes
and absorbs serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that is produced naturally by
the brain that helps a person feel good and happy and also helps to regulate
emotion. This method of treatment has been effective for many patients
worldwide and a significant number of people continue to be treated with Zoloft
with no major problems.
Some patients, however, have experienced severe side effects
as a result of their Zoloft use – increased rates of suicide and suicidal
thoughts have been noted, especially in children and young adults who are being
treated with the drug. In addition, Zoloft birth defects and
other serious side effects have been linked to the drug. Many medical experts believe that the side effects
of Zoloft are outweighed by the benefits to its patients, but families of
Zoloft patients who have committed suicide may be inclined to disagree.
Many patients and families of deceased patients have decided
to file lawsuits against the manufacturer of the drug, drugmaking giant Pfizer.
It is not clear whether any cases will be settled or if all will have to be
dealt with in court, but patients are looking for payments that will ease at
least the financial burden of being affected by such severe Zoloft side effects.
Patients who use the drug for either approved or off-label uses should consult
a Zoloft lawyer if they feel like they have a viable lawsuit.
